How much will my website cost?
I offer 3 fixed price options which should cover most requirements (prices correct as of September 2000):

One Page Website
£80
  • Contains your name, address, logo graphic, telephone, fax etc.
  • A brief description of your products/service (approx. 500 words) including up to 5 photos.
Optionally, additional photos @ £5 each.
  • Custom designed graphics, where required.
  • A link for customers to e-mail you direct from your site.

Small Website
£250
Up to 5 pages -
  • Contains your name, address, logo graphic, e-mail address etc.
  • Full details of your products/services including up to 12 photos.
  • A text based navigation bar on each page.
  • A customised feedback form (if required) to enable your customers to request further information or to send further information to you. (Requires that your host supports this with a CGI script - Freeserve does).
  • Counter setup, so you know how many people visit your site. (Provided for free by thecounter.com).
For an example of this type of site, which I designed, visit Eshott Airfield.

Comprehensive Website
£550
Up to 12 pages -
  • As the small Website but with more information/photos.
  • More sophisticated design elements and layout.
  • More graphics and 'rollover' animated navigation buttons.
For an example of this type of site, which I designed, visit Turboventure.

The above prices include registering your site with the major search engines but do not include hosting (storing your website on the Internet). I am not registered for V.A.T., so the price you see is the price you pay. All prices are one-off charges: you are responsible for paying any charges to your web space provider.
Of course, if you want something different, I will quote you a price. However, I don't design sites which require secure credit card ordering or use a database.
Payment becomes due when I invoice you on receipt of your promotional material.
A "page" can be thought of as containing approximately the same amount of information as an A4 brochure page, although I will often make them longer (at no extra charge) if it would mean breaking up a key concept across two pages.

What will my site look like?
It will resemble your existing promotional material (within the bounds of what is possible and practical to do on the Web) with the same logos and graphics (assuming that's what you want) or I can provide different ones.
Unlike other 'budget' website developers, I'll layout your information in an attractive manner, not just a boring page of full width text and I certainly won't just turn your brochure into a giant image file which would take forever to download! Nor will your site contain any psychedelic colour schemes, tacky animations or flashing horizontal bars which are supposed to be 'cool'! Remember, this is a bespoke design service - if there is anything on your site which you are not happy with, I will change it.

How long will it take to build my site?
I will probably be able to create your site within 2 weeks (longer for the comprehensive site) depending on how quickly I receive the promotional literature you send me and if you want me to make any alterations. I will give you a completion date when I invoice you.

Why are you cheaper than other website designers?

What if I don't like my site?
If you don't like an aspect of the site I have created for you, then just let me know and I will change it until you are happy as long as your request is reasonable!

What will my site's address be?
This depends on where you choose to 'host' (store the files I create on their computer which is permanently connected to the Internet) your site. I offer 2 options:
Domain name and commercial web space
I can register your choice of domain name and transfer your site to a commercial host. I will choose the best deal available at the time and e-mail you to confirm before ordering. Expect to pay around £80 p.a.

Arrange your own hosting
With this option you're free to host your site wherever you like, including your I.S.P.'s free webspace. If you want a feedback form on your site your host must support either C.G.I. scripts or have a 'form-mailer' program installed. Three free I.S.P's which do are Freeserve, Free4all and UKLinux.net (Don't be put off by the fact that UKLinux is aimed at users of the Linux operating system; it works just the same with MS Windows).
I e-mail the files which make up your site to you; what you do with them after that is up to you! If you need help or advice getting your new website hosted, I offer free e-mail/fax support to clients. I have listed some of the possibilities below:

1. Use your existing Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Most I.S.P.s, even the free ones like freeserve, include free web space you can use for your business. This is great but they have 2 minor disadvantages:
  1. Your site/email address has the name of your I.S.P. in it eg www.yourname.freeserve.co.uk
  2. If you change your I.S.P. you have to change your site/e-mail address, possibly confusing your customers.
To overcome these problems you could also register your domain name with a web forwarder - see below. I personally think that the free I.S.P.s are a good place to start. With the exception of getting your own domain name, they offer much the same service as a commercial host charging £150+ per year.

3. Set up a new account with a free I.S.P.
There's nothing to stop you opening another account with a free I.S.P. purely to host your new site on if your existing I.S.P. isn't appropriate. E-mail from your site could still be sent to your existing e-mail address. Note that free I.S.P.s require you to dial up their service at least once per month. You could use this option along with web forwarding (see below).

4. Use a web forwarding service.
A web forwarding service, such as the one provided by simplynames, allow you to both have your own domain name and still use free web space. After registering your domain name (I can do this for you or you can do it yourself), the web forwarder automatically redirects references to your domain name to your free web space and e-mail account, wherever that may be. Using this option together with free web space means you could have your own domain name for as little as £6 p.a.

How do you get my site onto the Internet?
If you wish me to arrange commercial hosting and domain name registration for you I will take care of everything. If you wish to arrange your own hosting, I will e-mail the necessary files to you so you can transfer them to your web space yourself, following the instructions of your I.S.P. - this is usually a simple procedure using a free F.T.P. program. If you need help, simply e-mail me for advice. I will then check to make sure that everything on your site is working correctly.

What if I want to update part of my site?
If it's just a minor text update like changing a price I will do this for a flat fee of £10 - just e-mail me the details.
For large sections of text or adding a new photo or graphic the price is £10 per item.

How will potential customers find my site?
Once your site is up and running I will register it with the major Internet search engines (included in the price!). This means that anyone typing your company name or type of business into one of these search engines should be given a brief description of your business and its Internet address.
I also include special code in your web pages to help these search engines categorize your site.
You should do your part too by printing your website address on your stationery/adverts and by referring your customers to your site if they have Internet access.

How do you find out what to include in my site?
By the combination of the information you give in the order form, the promotional material you send me and by my e-mailing/faxing you with any queries.
The promotional material you send is key to the process as it enables me to use your logo and product information in creating your site.
You have probably already spent time and money in creating your brochures; why not increase the return on that investment by using them as the basis of your website? I can develop your site more quickly and thus keep the cost to you low.
